#1830
William Murdoch left his home town in southern Scotland aged 23 and walked the 300 miles to Birmingham. Upon arrival he asked James Watt for a job, got one and went on to become a full partner with Matthew Boulton and Watt. Murdoch developed many innovations, but is well known for inventing gas lighting. Boulton was a member of the Lunar Society, a full moon meeting group of luminaries considered to be founders of the British Industrial Revolution.
