Birmingham’s only remaining greyhound Stadium in Perry Barr was firstly the home of Birchfield Harriers Athletic Club.This was opened as the ‘Alexander Sports Ground’ and was named after W.W. Alexander, an instrumental figure in the clubs history.In 1977, Birchfield Harriers left and moved to the Alexander Stadium, one of the key venues for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Jack Price, who ran for Small Heath Harriers won the first ever Marathon race to take place in the Midlands in May 1908. This race acted as a trial race for the 1908 Olympics held in London. After being selected for the British team, Price withdrew from the race after 15 miles in extremely hot weather.

In October 1986, Birmingham went up against five other cities for the right to host the 1992 Olympic Games. The overwhelming favourite to win the bid was Barcelona, which won in the third round of voting. If Birmingham had been successful, it would have seen many new stadiums constructed, including a new athletics stadium built upon the site of the NEC.
