History of Kings Heath Park

The park was originally called Victoria Park is centred on a house, built in 1832. In 1880 the house was bought by John Cartland, a wealthy industrialist. From 1909-1911 the house was used as a school.  In 1911 Kings Heath and the park was incorporated into the city of Birmingham.

Kings Heath House

A house on this site was burnt down during the Birmingham 'Church and King' Riots in 1791, on land belonging to John Harwood, the original house was burnt down. It was rebuilt in the early 19th Century, and this is the Grade II listed building we see today. Stuccoed with a slate roof. The council bought the parkland and house in 1908, and from 1952 it became the Birmingham Horticultural Training School. Also called the School of Horticultural Training. There is now a tea room here which can be accessed through the doors in the middle, this is the Cartland Tea Rooms.

The Lodge at King Edward VI Camp Hill Schools

Near the Vicarage Road main entrance to King Edward VI Camp Hill Schools (for both the Boys and Girls schools) is The Lodge. It is a Grade II listed building dating to the early 19th Century and can be seen from Kings Heath Park. It is possible that is used to be the lodge or gatehouse to Kings Heath House.

Kings Heath Park is centered on the Park House which was built in 1832 for the MP, William Congreve Russell. In 1880, it was bought by John Cartland (ancestor of the author Barbara Cartland, lover of pinkness and author of  romantic novels!).

The land was sold to the council and opened as a public park in 1908. The building houses council offices and the Cartland Tea Rooms.

An Indian Summer in Kings Heath Park during September 2020

A Sunday afternoon visit to Kings Heath Park during September 2020, on award winning person with passion Elliott's 38th birthday. It was sunny afternoon, plenty of people about. September 2020, means that during the month, Elliott (that's me) would have another birthday. On the Sunday afternoon, we headed to Kings Heath Park, for a bit of a walk around. The walk was a bit slow at times (I'm usually a fast walker, but wasn't on my own). On a Sunday in September with sunshine and fine weather, was a lot of people out in the park. Both car parks were full (personally I prefer to get the 11C bus there if I was on my own).

Since my last visit, Cartlands Tea Room has reopened. And you can buy a 99 ice cream with a Flake. The garden centre is open again, but only Monday's to Friday's. The TV Garden was still closed to the public. Kids playing on the basketball court, others having a kick about with a football, or at the two play areas. Or having a picnic on the lawn.

Sign / banner seen on Vicarage Road in Kings Heath, Saying that Cartlands Tea Room is now reopened.

A sunny May afternoon at Kings Heath Park on lockdown

A sunny May afternoon at Kings Heath Park on lockdown

This was my first time back to Kings Heath since lockdown came into effect in late March 2020. Since restrictions were eased, we headed for a walk round Highbury Park, before walking to Kings Heath Park. Was so many people out and about enjoying the weather. Sporting activities were going on there. Playground still closed though.

Back to Kings Heath for the first time in over 2 months since lockdown came into effect. On Thursday 21st May 2020. Lockdown restrictions have been eased, so you can travel a bit further, but can still not use public transport (so went we in the car).

During the Highbury Park walk, we left Highbury Park heading up Dads Lane, going under the Camp Hill line railway bridge and crossing onto Avenue Road. Just a short walk before reaching the Avenue Road entrance to Kings Heath Park.

My May post at Highbury Park is here: A sunny day in May at Highbury Park and Highbury Hall.

The playground near Avenue Road - the Kings Heath Park Play Area was obviously closed due to the pandemic / lockdown. And remains closed even when lockdown restrictions were eased.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (May 2020) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Families sitting on the grass, and in front of them I think a family was playing a game of croquet (or something, hard to tell with the trees in the way).

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (May 2020) (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

In the pond, saw a moorhen.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (May 2020) (3).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

The trees around the pond were lush and green and fully grown back after the last winter. The fountains weren't on though.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (May 2020) (4).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Saw a Bowling Green on a walk around, and saw some men playing a game of bowls (not sure if they were of the same family or not). What was concerning was the group of men playing football, surely they are not all related and live in the same household? I did not see any security or Police in the park.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (May 2020) (5).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

More people relaxing on the lawn to the back of the park, some sitting down on the grass. Hopefully socially distancing?

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (May 2020) (6).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Meanwhile a walk past the TV Garden. All gates were locked, but I took photos through the bars of the gates. Got this old brick wall and gate.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (May 2020) (7).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

A purple shed and purple flowers. Google Lens says that they are Allium aflatunese. Last went around here 6 years ago (around the TV Garden).

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (May 2020) (8).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

A close up look at the Allium aflatunese purple coloured flowers, in the TV Garden.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (May 2020) (9).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Before we left, I wanted to get a phone of this yarn bombing on the fence of the football pitch.

Life is tough but so are we

Kings Heath Park over the years from 2012 to 2019

Post image

I might not be able to go to Kings Heath Park now (as it's not in walking distance), but we can look back at my photos taken between 2012 and 2019 when I was able to get an 11C to Kings Heath. Most of my early photos were taken around February 2012, and I have returned on and off ever since. Although probably went to this park as a child in the 1980s (using the playground).

It's about time for a new Kings Heath Park post, but using my photos taken on walks around the park between 2012 and 2019. Usually travel to Kings Heath on the 11C bus, but the 76 also goes past the park. The bus stop is on the Vicarage Road, but I might sometimes now get off on Addison Road and stop off for a coffee before walking to the park (of course this was all before lockdown). The schools of King Edward VI Camp Hill are located next door to the park. The High Street and Alcester Road South are in walking distance of the park down Vicarage Road.

For my previous Kings Heath Park posts click the following links to read and enjoy the photos:

2012

I first had a photo walk around Kings Heath Park in early February 2012.

Near the corner of the Vicarage Road and Avenue Road entrance is The Lodge at 72 Vicarage Road.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Feb 2012) (1).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Swings in the playground as a jogger runs past me. I probably used these facilities back in the 1980s (These are not the same swings and slides as when I was a child and there wasn't a perimeter fence 35 years ago, but was in the same location).

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Feb 2012) (2).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

This slide has a cylindrical shaped for kids to climb up.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Feb 2012) (3).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

It was winter and it was very cold as I walked around the paths in the park. The grass was frosted. And it snowed later that day.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Feb 2012) (4).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Some dirt paths amongst the trees. They lead to the ponds.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Feb 2012) (5).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

The pond was completely frozen over at the time.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Feb 2012) (6).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

View to the School of Horticultural Training in what was Kings Heath House. A Grade II listed building School of Horticultural Training (in Kings Heath Park), Birmingham.  Dates to the early 19th century. But a previous house on this site that was owned by John Harwood was burnt down in 1791 during the Birmingham 'Church and King' Riots of 1791 (according to Bill Dargue's site (Kings Heath - Bill Dargue). The City Council later bought the existing house and grounds in 1908. It became a training centre for Birmingham Parks staff and the Birmingham Horticultural Training School was housed here from 1952.

Another playground close to the Avenue Road entrance with this tyre that kids can slide down the rope.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Feb 2012) (11).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Also saw this squirrel at the time.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Feb 2012) (12).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

2013

Trees in Kings Heath Park seen during the middle of May 2013. This was the day of the Free Radio Walkathon (link to the post is above). The trees were seen on Vicarage Road.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (May 2013) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

A couple of weeks later and saw these bluebells from Avenue Road on the Late May Bank Holiday Weekend. From a walk down to Dog Pool Lane and Dad's Lane in Selly Park.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (May 2013) (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

2014

The visit during a warm March 2014, was to see the TV Garden on an Open Sunday, I only had my then smartphone camera with me at the time.

Saw this flower tower. The flower pots were planted by Cofton Nursery (Birmingham Bloom).

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (March 2014) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

There ws also this flower bed. I think it was close to Kings Heath House.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (March 2014) (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

The pond in fine weather. I was trying to record a video clip but somehow also got this photo of the pond as well.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (March 2014) (3).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

This time the sky was blue and the water jet fountains in the pond was one. Is several areas to sit with benches around the ponds.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (March 2014) (4).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

TV Garden

The TV Garden was open on Sunday 16th March 2014, and it is usually open about once a month in the afternoon. Although this was the only time I went around it. It was formerly used by ATV and Central TV in the past.

2015

During the summer of 2015, The Big Hoot 2015 owl sculpture trail was on around Birmingham, and that included Kings Heath. Was two owls in the park, one big one, and a Little Hoot owl in the tea room. I saw them during August 2015.

Outside was Blodeuwedd by the artist Guy McKinley. The sponsor was Wild in Art (who runs these trails all over the country / world).

dndimg alt="The Big Hoot in Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Big Hoot Kings Heath Park (August 2015) (1).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

As close up look at Blodeuwedd.

The back of Blodeuwedd. I only really got this one from the side.

dndimg alt="The Big Hoot in Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Big Hoot Kings Heath Park (August 2015) (3).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

Inside of the tea room at Kings Heath House was the Big Hoot's Little Hoot owl was Annie's Owl by Vinnie the Coach. Vinnie illustrates how The Little Hoot can be used as a device to enable young people of all ages to achieve their Arts Award. He takes inspiration from acclaimed Birmingham writer Benjamin Zephaniah's poem Nature Trail and visual influence from Vincent van Gogh. The sculpture is in memory of local resident Matt Kendall and will be a permanent monument for the Foundation set up in his honour.

dndimg alt="The Big Hoot in Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Big Hoot Kings Heath Park (August 2015) (4).JPG" style="width: 100%;" />

The Big Hoot website that was up in 2015 is no longer online sadly. But has been saved / archived on the Wayback Machine. The Big Sleuth in 2017 did not have a trail around Kings Heath, which was a bit disappointing.

2016

Just one photo of Kings Heath Park taken on my then smartphone camera during May 2016. There was warm sunny weather at the time. Just up the path from the Vicarage Road. I think I sat on a bench to have a sandwich. The view towards the playground.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (May 2016).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

2017

This view of red tulips seen from the 11A bus on the Vicarage Road, passing Kings Heath Park during April 2017.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (April 2017).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

In August 2017 this gate at the corner of Vicarage Road and Avenue Road was temporarily closed as a precautionary measure. It was probably to stop travellers driving their caravans into the park and setting up an illegal camp.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (August 2017) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Again sat on a park bench in Kings Heath Park, in a view similar to the one from a year before. This time as well as the playground, you could see the spire of All Saints Church.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (August 2017) (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

My next proper walk in Kings Heath Park was during the autumn of October 2017. This was the start of a walk along the path near Avenue Road towards a bus stop on the Pershore Road in Selly Park.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Oct 2017) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Leaves all over the lawn near the playground, not far from Avenue Road.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Oct 2017) (3).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Leaves falling off the trees. This relatively new looking tree had yellow leaves coming down.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Oct 2017) (4).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Saw a squirrel near one of the trees on the grass near all the leaves.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Oct 2017) (5).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

2018

A quick visit in February 2018. There was scaffolding on the School of Horticultural Training - Kings Heath House.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Feb 2018) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

This view of the scaffolding from the pond side.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Feb 2018) (3).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

My next visit was during April 2018. It was a nice sunny day, and I popped into Kings Heath Park before walking down Avenue Road, Dad's Lane and Moor Green Lane, before going into the Holders Lane & Pebble Mills Fields (rear entrance of Cannon Hill Park).

Got some decent photos of the water jet fountains in the pond.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (April 2018) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Zooming in past the water jet fountain to the ducks.

Caught this squirrel before I headed down Dad's Lane.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (April 2018) (7).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Another walk around Kings Heath Park, this time during October 2018. This was from one of the times where I had a coffee at Coffee#1 then walked down to the park for a photo walk.

A dog being walked on a leash.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Oct 2018) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

More autumnal trees with leaves on the ground on the side near Avenue Road.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Oct 2018) (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

There was a lot of leaves on the ground around these purple coloured flowers.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Oct 2018) (3).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

More leaves on the ground around one of the paths.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Oct 2018) (4).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Saw these sheds / garages that I hadn't noticed on previous visits to the park.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Oct 2018) (5).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Close to one of the car parks was this small rock garden with summery trees.

2019

For my April 2019 photos please check out this post here: Kings Heath Park over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend 2019

My last walk to date walking around Kings Heath Park was in October 2019. Again a walk after having a coffee at Coffee#1.

This time getting some new photos close up of the playground since my original photos back in 2012.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Oct 2019) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Saw some orange berries on a tree.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Oct 2019) (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

I thought that the play equipment was new, but it's probably the same ones that I've always seen in this playground.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Oct 2019) (3).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

As with other City parks, they have the yellow playground sign here. Welcome to Kings Heath Park Play Area. (of course now during the lockdown it is closed while the park is open).

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Oct 2019) (4).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

This slide is the exact same one that I took in 2012, but from the other side. When I used the slides and swings here in the mid 1980s, the equipment was different and there wasn't a perimeter fence around the playground. The benches in the park back then were also different.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Oct 2019) (5).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Another dog going for walk, this one didn't have a leash on (it's owner would have been nearby).

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Oct 2019) (6).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Another squirrel running across the grass with leaves everywhere.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park (Oct 2019) (7).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Magical Lantern Festival 2017 at Kings Heath Park

Post image

The Magical Lantern Festival returned to Birmingham for the Christmas 2017 season, but this time at Kings Heath Park, having been at the Botanical Gardens the year before. I only really saw it in the daylight hours. Looked "magical" with the snow of December 2017. Did return once more at Christmas Eve, but didn't book a ticket to see after dark.

See also my Magical Lantern Festival post on the 2016 event at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

After getting some initial daylight photos from the 11A or 11C buses on the Vicarage Road in November 2017, I went to Kings Heath Park on the 8th December 2017 after it had snowed. Tickets to go after 5pm would have been anywhere between £15 to £17. But Kings Heath Park was open as normal before then for free.

A pink canopy of roses surrounded by snow.

I last came back on Christmas Eve 2017, by then the snow had melted, so looked a lot less Christmasy.

Fun fair rides under wraps. They probably open them up just before it gets dark. In the day they were covered over.

Kings Heath Park over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend 2019

Post image

It's been a hot four days over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend in late April 2019. I popped along to Kings Heath Park on Easter Monday, the 22nd April 2019 to check out the bluebells, the pond and flowers around the park! A walk down Vicarage Road into the park, then when I left, headed up Cartland Road towards Pershore Road, Stirchley (instead of Avenue Road).

Kings Heath Park over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend 2019

It's been a hot four days over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend in late April 2019. I popped along to Kings Heath Park on Easter Monday, the 22nd April 2019 to check out the bluebells, the pond and flowers around the park! A walk down Vicarage Road into the park, then when I left, headed up Cartland Road towards Pershore Road, Stirchley (instead of Avenue Road).

Entering from the Vicrage Road entrance near the corner of Avenue Road, saw this yellow flower near the gatehouse.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019 (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Heading up the path parallel to Avenue Road, having a look at the bluebells growing in the grass, with a few zoom ins.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019 (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

You don't have to go far to see bluebells it seems! Just catch the 11A or 11C to Kings Heath (or the 35 or 50). The High Street is in walking distance of the park.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019 (3).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Not as far zoomed in with this group of bluebells. Was also buttercups growing in the grass near the Avenue Road side.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019 (4).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Thought about leaving at Avenue Road, near one of the car park exits, but decided to check out the ponds instead! The trees around the pond was looking lush and green.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019 (5).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Even more lush and green around the pond here. Noticed some barriers to the left of here (not in the photo). The water jets were not turned on.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019 (6).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Lots of colour with the yellow and red flowers around the four pots and the flagpole.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019 (7).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

A zoom into the four pots in the middle.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019 (8).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

On the other side of the path heading back to the other Vicrage Road entrance / exit, saw these flowers planted on the left.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019 (9).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

More yellow and red flowers around this small tree on the right.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Kings Heath Park Easter Monday 2019 (10).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

My usual 10 minute walk in and out of the park. Headed past King Edward VI Camp Hill Schools (closed for the Easter holidays). Wasn't going to wait 20 minutes for another 11C, so walked up Cartland Road towards the Pershore Road in Stirchley. And the wait for the no 45 bus was 10 minutes.

Spring has clearly arrived at Kings Heath Park!

With lighter evenings, spring flowers, and many more people using our lovely park, Spring has most certainly arrived at Kings Heath Park.

March heralds the beginning of spring, and early spring flowers have started to blossom in Kings Heath Park. Daffodils and forsythia have brought bright splashes of yellow, and the huge magnolia near the Park House has been magnificent this year. The sunny days have brought more people to the park, and the lighter evenings have meant that more people can fit in a run or a walk with the dog after work. It is still cold though, so the children in the playground and the dog walkers are still wearing warm jackets! The pool, which had almost dried up during last year's hot summer, is filling up from the rain, and the heron has started visiting again.

The park staff have been busy maintaining the park throughout the winter, and March saw the second volunteer wood clearing event of the year, led by Dean the Ranger.

The Free Radio Walk for Kids Birmingham that took place on Sunday 19th May 2013. A charity walk that went all the way around the Outer Circle (11A / 11C bus routes). At Kings Heath Park it may have been a start or end, so many walkers ended up here, or started here. There used to be a Walkathon every year in the spring, once a year, but I don't think that there has been one for many years! It used to be the BRMB Walkathon in the past.

Welcome to the Free Radio Walk for Kids. Seen from the Vicarage Road at Kings Heath Park. Left to right.

Was a lot of canopies and portacabins there at the time (temporary).

Lots of volunteers on site. I think this was at the end of the walkathon.

On the day, the Big Brum Buz (Birmingham's then sightseeing tour bus) was parked on Vicarage Road opposite Kings Heath Park. It used to do sightseeing tours of the city starting from Colmore Row near Victoria Square.

Would assume that people doing the walk could get a ride on the bus, as there was people in green outfits on the day.

Some of them also had green wigs! The buses were still running that day on the 11A and 11C, as the walkers were on the pavements.

Raining at Kings Heath Park in late November 2018

It's late November 2018 and we have a few days of wind and rain, probably due to Storm Diana. On a day when the rain wasn't too bad, I popped along for a walk around the wet Kings Heath Park. This time headed down to the bottom, then out via the Avenue Road exit. Started off from Vicarage Road.

On a day with dull weather a quick walk around a wet Kings Heath Park. These walks normally take me around 10 minutes (am a fast walker). Weather was bad so after I finished the walk, walked back up the Vicarage Road towards the High Street and Alcester Road South. On a dry day, I might walk down Avenue Road and into Highbury Park, or towards Selly Park.

For me Kings Heath is easy to get to. On the 11C, or the 11A back home (the park is on the Outer Circle). The no 35 bus route also passes the park, as does the 27 and 76.

The path on the left from Vicarage Road heading towards the School of Horticulture Training. King Edward VI Camp Hill Schools are on the other side of the fence to the left. Trees have mostly shed their leaves here.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park rain" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Rain at Kings Heath Park (Nov 18) (1).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Approaching Kings Heath House. Now the School of Horticulture Training. With the bad weather, wasn't anybody sitting or standing outside of the building. It's Grade II listed and dates to the early 19th century. A previous building was burnt down in 1791 during riots in Birmingham. In the late 18th century the house and grounds belonged to John Harwood. The Birmingham Horticultural Training School opened here in 1952.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park rain" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Rain at Kings Heath Park (Nov 18) (2).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Main entrance to the house. Now a ramp for those with wheelchairs or pushchairs. The tea room is over to the right. Palm trees outside remind you of the summer gone and the summer to come.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park rain" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Rain at Kings Heath Park (Nov 18) (3).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Kings Heath Park Nursery. These look like palm trees to me outside (they are probably not - am not sure on tree species).

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park rain" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Rain at Kings Heath Park (Nov 18) (4).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Christmas decorations inside. Plants for sale. An open greenhouse.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park rain" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Rain at Kings Heath Park (Nov 18) (5).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Heading down to the bottom end of the park close to the Camp Hill line, past this field. Lots of trees around, mostly leave-less now.

dndimg alt="Kings Heath Park rain" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Rain at Kings Heath Park (Nov 18) (6).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Saw this robin on the path. Zoomed in on it. If you get to close they tend to fly away!

dndimg alt="Robin in Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Rain at Kings Heath Park (Nov 18) (7).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Some steps down to the field at the bottom of the park. Trees still in leaf must be evergreen!

dndimg alt="Raining in Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Rain at Kings Heath Park (Nov 18) (8).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

The leaves on this tree have gone blood red and has left a pile of leaves below it!

dndimg alt="Rain in Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Rain at Kings Heath Park (Nov 18) (9).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Field at the bottom of the park.

dndimg alt="Rain at Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Rain at Kings Heath Park (Nov 18) (10).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Up the path from the bottom of the park as the rain came down. The branches of the trees forming a canopy, but that wouldn't stop you getting wet in the rain! Leaves on the lawn remind you that it is still autumn as winter approaches.

dndimg alt="Rain at Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Rain at Kings Heath Park (Nov 18) (11).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

More trees with leaves still to be shed. Quite yellowy brown now. Heading up to the Avenue Road exit.

dndimg alt="Rain at Kings Heath Park" dndsrc="../uploadedfiles/Rain at Kings Heath Park (Nov 18) (12).jpg" style="width: 100%;" />

Saw this empty basketball court. Normally if someone was playing in here, or in one of the tennis courts, I wouldn't take a photo. Puddles all over the court. Would probably get splashed if you jumped up to throw a basketball into the hoop!
