Black Sabbath Bench on Broad Street on the hottest day of the year so far!

Post image

I wasn't able to get to Westside on the day when Geezer Butler and Tony Iommi unveiled the Black Sabbath Bench on the renamed Black Sabbath Bridge above the Broad Street Tunnel. So popped along in the scorching sunshine to see it on Saturday 29th June 2019. Bit of a crowd around it taking their own photos too. Is also a new exhibition at BM & AG from the Home of Metal.

Black Sabbath Bench on Broad Street on the hottest day of the year so far!

The Black Sabbath Bench was unveiled by Geezer Butler and Tony Iommi on Wednesday 26th June 2019. From the images / videos I've seen they went along the canal in narrowboat. Wasn't able to get their that day (would have been too crowded and I wasn't aware of it until it was taking place). Bill Ward and Ozzy Osbourne were unable to make it.

Photo collage of Geezer, Ozzy, Tony and Bill. Didn't realise that they had signatures on them, so Bill was a bit cut off on the zoom ins.

Side view and other people taking Smartphone photos, including some were sitting on it having their photo taken.

Other side towards the path to Brindleyplace near The Brasshouse and Celebrity Restaurant.

Side view and I think they have removed Ozzy's star that used to be here. But I believe all four stars will go in front. Tony's was still in place a bit further down near The ICC and Symphony Hall.

Back in December 2009 was when I first started taking photos of the Broad Street Walk of Stars. Ozzy Osbourne used to have his star on the bridge above the Broad Street Tunnel. Hopefully it will return soon.

Tony Iommi's star also seen during December 2009. As far as I am aware, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward have yet to receive stars on Broad Street. But expect them to get some placed in front of the bench in the near future.

Walking past Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in Chamberlain Square. A new exhibition has opened in the Gas Hall from the Home of Metal called Black Sabbath 50 Years A Major Exhibition. Tickets at www.homeofmetal.com.

Also saw a billboard for this exhibition from the no 50 bus on Rea Street near Birmingham Coach Station in Digbeth. It was near The Anchor Inn. Other billboards are around other parts of the city as well. Rock 'N' Roll!

Black Sabbath Bridge, Birmingham

‘Black Sabbath Bridge’ is now officially a Birmingham landmark.

Two founding members of the Brummie mega group yesterday attended the public event at the road bridge which crosses the canal on Broad Street.

Watched on by hundreds of Sabbath fans eager to catch a glimpse of two Brummie icons, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler arrived in true Birmingham style, travelling by narrowboat to unveil the new bridge signage from the canal below.

As well as the new bridge name, a ‘heavy metal bench’ incorporating images of the band’s original four members is now permanently based on the bridge, which is expected to draw hundreds and thousands of tourists to the city and the canal network.

The bench is inscribed "Geezer. Ozzy. Tony. Bill. Made in Birmingham 1968'.

Renowned tribute band Sabbra Cadabra had provided the entertainment beforehand, belting out hit after hit from the canal island opposite the National Sea Life Centre.

After the presentation, Butler and Iommi were only too eager to say thank you to the fans who had attended, before going on an autograph spree.

Sabbath will also get their own Birmingham Walk of Stars, with plans to also give drummer Bill Ward one, before realigning them into the shape of a cross in front of the bench.

The unveiling coincides with a major Home Of Metal exhibition celebrating Black Sabbath and the band's legacy called "Black Sabbath 50 Years". It runs until September 29 at Birmingham Museum And Art Gallery.

Be sure to check it out!
