Alexander Stadium - history

The stadium was built in Perry Park, from 1975 to 1976 for the Birchfield Harriers athletics club, who moved from their previous home the Alexander Sports Ground (now Perry Barr Stadium) in 1976. It was previously expanded in 2011 with the building of a new stand, which was completed ahead of the Diamond League British Grand Prix in summer 2011.

Over the years, the stadium has been host to the Diamond League, and the British Athletics Championships. As well as the trials before the European or World Championships or Olympic Games. Team USA, used the stadium to train ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

After Birmingham won the bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, work to rebuild the stadium began in 2020, and should be completed by 2022, ahead of the Commonwealth Games scheduled to take place at the Alexander Stadium from July to August 2022. The stadium's capacity will be increased from 12,700 to 20,000. And at least 40,000 during the games itself.
